10 Reasons to Test for STIs (PLWHA)

The 10 reasons to test for STIs campaign wants to increase HIV positive gay men’s awareness around STI increases, the impact of having an STI on their health and the importance of having routine sexual health tests.

STIs are an important health issue for pos guys. The consequences of having an STI can be damaging, particularly untreated syphilis. The symptoms of STIs may be atypical and treatment more complicated.

Many pos guys believe that they are routinely screened for a range of STIs when in fact they are only being tested infrequently, selectively on request or not at all. They need to specifically ask for tests and regular testing should be included in their routine health maintenance.

Health issues, high rates of infection and irregular testing patterns, indicate a need for more attention to STI screening, treatment and prevention among pos gay men.
